GREENSBORO JUSTICE SUMMER PRESS STATEMENT
For immediate Release: August 24, 2010
Persecution and Purge Week
The Greensboro Police Department (GPD) leadership continues to plod deeper and deeper into the subculture of corruption and double standards. four (4) police officers, including command level Officer Captain Charles Cherry, are on track to be fired by weeks end. Six clergy members will be tried on Thursday, August 26th for an act of civil disobedience to expose the police injustices. City Manager Rashad Young continues to compromise himself as he supports a flawed process with corrupt police leadership. Clergy and community leaders are planning a major community gathering at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, on Sunday, August 29, 2010, at 3:00 PM, to address the justice crisis in the Greensboro Police Department.
We are happy that a growing number of our white brothers and sisters are joining with us in this most important struggle for justice. Justice, even when it involves race, is everyone’s issue. In truth, we should be one community. those of us who have joined together in this Justice Summer effort look forward to working with all people of all social classes and all races in the noble quest for a just community and a peaceful society.
We come before you today with troubled hearts. City Manager Rashad is wrong when he asserts that there is no subculture of corruption and double standards within the Greensboro Police Department. We are disappointed that he has chosen to ignore the great wealth of information available to him that confirms this fact.
Mr. Young’s letter explains nothing. It is just a listing of statistics, tied to a flawed line of reasoning that is without merits, especially as it relates to the current crisis within the police department. It in no way explains why Interim Chief Crotts placed Captain Charles Cherry on “fit for duty” status, suggesting that he was mentally ill despite the fact that there was no basis for such an action. Nor does it explain why additional charges were manufactured against Captain Cherry after it was clear that the psychologist originally chosen by the city had a business relationship with the very police leadership that recommended Captain Cherry for “fit for duty” evaluation in the first place.
Additionally, Captain Cherry had standing grievances against that same police leadership, specifically Assistant Chief Anita Holder and Interim Chief Dwight Crotts. Subsequently, two professional psychologists found Captain Cherry quite fit for duty. To add insult to injury, Interim Chief Dwight Croats is now scheduled to sit in judgment of Captain Cherry tomorrow (Wednesday). In order to find Captain Cherry innocent, Interim Chief Dwight Crotts must essentially find himself guilty. How ridiculous can a process become?
The City Manager’s letter does not explain why previous City Manager Robert Morgan’s decision to reinstate Officer A. J. Blake was overthrown by current police leadership on false claims, supposedly growing from a June 2, 2009 press conference which obviously had already occurred prior to former Manager Morgan’s decision. Manager Young’s letter does not explain why Officer Royal and Officer Reyes have been placed on a track to be terminated on frivolous and manufactured charges. His letter does not explain why Assistant City Manager Michael Speedling openly admitted that the Professional Standards Division was “incompetent” and/or “discriminatory” on a particular case yet refused to consider that this same “incompetence” and “discrimination” could be at work and likely tainted findings in other case. It does not explain why Yes Weekly Newspaper reported that there is less than an 11% conviction rate for the Latin Kings, a street group (gang) that has been an unfair target of the GPD Gang Unit, when the state average for felony convictions in the county is over 65%. what accounts for this more than 53% discrepancy in convictions if it is not illegal arrests and unfounded harassment? mr. Young’s statement simply misses the point.
The News and Record editorial is wrong in its suggestion that a quality investigation has been completed. It is also wrong in characterizing those of us who stand for justice as “detractors.”
This week started as a week of persecutions and purges by Greensboro Police Department Leadership. from the Christian tradition it could well be called “crucifixion week.” However, we come believing that the tragedy of persecutions and purges can be transformed into a triumph for truth and justice. We, therefore, call upon City Manager Rashad to end the travesty of justice that is now in process:
- Specifically we request that the persecution of these fine officers be stopped by ordering that these biased hearing – with largely predetermined outcomes – be terminated immediately.
- Secondly, that the City Manager immediately takes steps to insure that an outside agency conducts any further hearings or investigations, as there will be no credibility of any findings coming out of the Greensboro Police Department.
- Thirdly, that an investigation be initiated of current Greensboro police leadership, including Interim Chief Dwight Crotts, Assistant Chief Anita Holder, Assistant City Manager Michael Speedling, and possibly other GPD leadership.
We are more determined than ever to press forward with the struggle for justice that we believe will help save the soul of our city. if the hearings are not stopped, we intend to have a group present to bear witness for truth and justice each day that a hearing is held this week between 10 and 11 AM at the Maple Street Police Substation.
We are planning a citywide gathering to inform and galvanize the community to stand together for justice. this gathering is scheduled for Sunday, August 29, 3:00 PM, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1301 Alamance Church Road, where Bishop George Brooks is pastor. All individuals of all racial, all social, and all economic backgrounds are invited to come. We want to make clear that we are not the enemy of the police department, nor are we the enemy of the city. We are convinced that we are standing for the true greatness of Greensboro, and we invite and urge all to come learn from one another, and let us walk together.
Finally, we intend to solicit the signatures of at least 15 to 20 pastors on a letter to be sent to the U.S. Justice Department shortly after the August 29th citywide gathering at Mt. Zion. We appeal to all in our community to come together to work together for a more just community and a peaceful society.

WePay Wants to Simplify Group Payments
The hardest part of helping organize my coming high school reunion — aside from devising ways to break the ice with old crushes and rivals — is collecting money from the alumni for tickets.
A new start-up in Palo Alto called WePay, is hoping to solve that problem by making it much easier to accept payments from a large group of people.
The company allows users to set up group accounts on the Web site for a specific purpose or event, such as collecting money from a large outing like a bachelor party to divvying up living expenses among roommates. the administrator of the group can set the amount, due date and other details and send out a bill, or request for payment.
The service first became available to the public in April. Last month, more than 1,000 groups signed up to conduct group transactions, said Rich Aberman, co-founder of the company.
On Friday, the company announced it raised $7.5 million in a Series B round of venture cash from investment firms Highland Capital Partners and August Capital, to expand its business.
The company previously raised a Series a round in the amount of $1.6 million from August Capital; a PayPal founder, Max Levchin; and Eric Dunn, the former chief financial officer of Intuit, among others.
WePay makes money by tacking on deposit fees from money deposited into the accounts. the company charges 50 cents per deposit or 3.5 percent of the deposit, depending on whether the deposits are made from banking accounts or by credit cards.
Deposits are held for safekeeping by Bancorp Bank, an F.D.I.C-insured partner bank. the group administrator can spend the money via an electronic transfer, a prepaid debit card or request a paper check.
Mr. Aberman, co-founder and chief executive of the company, said the service is meant as a counterpoint to PayPal, which he said is great for consumers. “If you want to sell something online, PayPal is a great option,” he said. “If you want to collect money for a fantasy football league or a group trip, this is a better option.”
That’s because in part, PayPal funnels all of the funds directed towards a user into a single account, regardless of its source, said Mr. Aberman. That can make it confusing for someone who is say, coordinating both a big group trip and accepting money from a housemate.
“PayPal was incredibly innovative 10 years ago, but there are a lot of features and functionality that PayPal cannot yet offer,” he said.
Swipely’s Credit Card Purchase-Sharing Service Opens to the Public
Today, purchase-sharing startup Swipely is opening its doors to the public after several months as an invitation-only site.
The service rivals Blippy in nature and allows users to automatically share purchases by linking their credit or debit card to their Swipely account, or letting the service grab purchase info from e-mail receipts.
Swipely, which bills itself as “an online service that turns purchases into conversations,” is celebrating the public launch by introducing badges based on swipes and rewarding early badge earners with freebies including coffee, books and movies.
Most web users will likely raise an eyebrow at the thought of attaching their credit card to a social media site for the purpose of sharing their purchases. Swipely Founder and CEO Angus Davis believes, however, that his online service is a natural extension of offline conversations that happen around purchases. of course, he also candidly admits that Swipely’s biggest challenge will be to communicate that message to consumers.
In practice, Swipely isn’t as scary as it may sound. those users who simply want to test the waters without handing over their credit card information can do so by importing email receipts instead; the limited experience is still a rich one. still, Davis indicates that roughly one-third of Swipely members have opted to link a credit or debit card to their account.
In terms of features and on-site user experience, Swipely excels on the product review side of things with simple rating, commenting and sharing features, and a clean user interface that is easy to navigate. The service also includes support for geo-location — powered by Localeze — so swipes are tied to their specific business location.
On the business side of things, Swipely could help companies better understand the link between online product discussions and offline shopping habits. “90% of money is still spent offline … the credit card in your pocket offers a way to connect the two worlds,” explains Davis.
On that front, users can eventually expect Swipely to team up with retailers to help them offer purchase-driven rewards.
With the public launch, the well-funded startup will now focus on growth and continue its mission to add value to every swipe.

Credit Cards Guaranteed – A Review to Help You Find the Top Guaranteed Credit Cards
Many people want credit cards guaranteed for approval, as obviously they don’t have to sweat out the waiting process of finding out whether they were approved or not.
Typically, people looking for these cards have low credit scores, and find it hard to get approved for a regular credit card, which is why they are looking for guaranteed approval.
Your initial reaction might be to avoid using credit cards, due to your low credit score, and try t o pay for everything with cash. however, one of the important things you need to remember about these is that they offer you an opportunity to instantly start raising your credit score, very important for someone in your position.
Also, these can actually help you, because they generally come with a low spending limit, which makes sure that you don’t spend more than you could afford, which is how you got into this situation in the first place. hopefully, this will instill into you the habit of spending what you can afford and therefore building up your credit in this manner.
Typically, when it comes to credit cards that are guaranteed, you don’t have to worry about credit checks (hence the term credit cards guaranteed). If they looked into your past before granting you the credit card, they obviously would not be guaranteed.
However, an important note about these cards is that they always come with higher interest rates than your ordinary credit cards, simply because of the risk you represent to the company giving you a card.Of course, before you go through with this process, don’t just accept the first company you see. Make sure to compare the various firms and find the best interest rates around.
This can be done very quickly and effectively online-just take a few minutes to fill out each application, and you can instantly receive tens if not hundreds of quotes in just a few hours, which will help make the decision of which credit cards guaranteed to go with much easier.
Be sure to look for low long term interest rates versus short term- quite simply, many companies offer dirt cheap initial rates in order to get you hooked, and then they raise them a lot in a matter of a few months, once you are already sucked in.
Another tip is to budget weekly, and make sure you don’t spend more than that amount. quite simply, figure out how much money you have available to spend for the week, and stay right at or under that amount, and you will be able to pay off your bills on time, and therefore raise your credit quickly.
The important thing is that you learn from your past mistakes and improve your financial habits in the future. this is where budgeting comes in, and if you do this properly and every week, you will find your credit score going up very quickly.
Finally, consider hiring a credit repair company, as these firms are experts in the industry, and can help you raise your credit score much more quickly than doing the methodical paying your bills on time method.
Therefore, finding long term rates is much more important. hopefully these tips on credit cards guaranteed will help you find the right one to help you raise your credit.
